Our history

San Diego, a growth story

The history of Ingenio San Diego dates back to 1887, when businessmen Otto Bleuler and Sophus Koch bought the San Diego farm and began the artisanal production of pylon sugar and, from 1901, that of centrifuged sugar.

In 1943, the Vila Betoret family acquired this farm; at that time 7,500 quintals of sugar were produced annually.

Starting in 1958, the San Diego sugar mill administration was assumed by Don Fraterno Vila Betoret, who has tirelessly promoted the growth of the organization. The first challenge set was the construction of a new, larger and more modern mill, a goal reached in 1965. That year, the new mill began operations with a daily grinding of 800 tons of cane that produced 1,500 quintals of sugar per day. In the 1965-66 harvest, 70,936 quintals were produced and a year later, in the 1966-67 season, 126,871 quintals of sugar

In 1974, a new generation of directors joined the San Diego mill administration, who enthusiastically promoted new projects. One of the most important was the acquisition of the Trinidad mill in 1987, with the aim of increasing the cane sugar production area. In the first sugar cane harvest of Trinidad, from 1988-89, 22,086 quintals of sugar were produced.

Thanks to honest and responsible work, daily dedication, care of resources, close family unity and the commitment of its collaborators, important goals have been achieved in just a few years. To date, San Diego Corporation produces more than 5 million quintals of sugar during the annual harvest.
